Thanks to Stephen Turnbull, jep200404, et al for the hints and advice.
The external USB hard disk worked perfectly following implementation of
the commands all of you gave.
Following the latest kernel upgrade, the external hard disk is back to
read-only status.
What, exactly, happens during a kernel upgrade that breaks write
permissions to an external hard disk?
Does a set of commands exist that can clear up the problem?
