And to reply to myself, they really are cheap...  1,300 yen for
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=568-1890-ND
- which is a good spec and with pretty much every interface you'd
want.  The problems would be being dealing with an LQFP package, and
how many extra components you need.
