Ooo....there's your issue. It's a lame window manager. :-/

Note that I'm runing gnome as well, but not using metacity. (Nor
nautilus, for that matter, most of the time, though I am known to bring
up a nautilus file manager on occasion.)

I hadn't realized that, but I just checked and you're quite correct.

Sure you can. First, I see only one dialog box at a time, that being the
one for the current tab. Second, the dialog box says:

    A username and password are being requested by http://exmaple.com.
    The site says: "somename"
