As I've said in a previous email, this is a bug of Hardy so you should
report it to Kubuntu team.

Only / is presents.
Now /etc and /root are part of it( the root partition "/").

gparted is an utility for repartitioning your harddisk.
Kubuntu should not do that without your permission.
Can you upload( don't copy/paste :P) it?

Bug! /dev/sdb1 is not listed in the output of "mount".

Btw, "mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /etc -n" is nonsense because /etc is
already there.
If you want to try again:

sudo mkdir -p /media/sdb1
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1

though I think this would fail( due to _the_ bug)

I don't know but if you report your problem to Kubuntu team,
probably they will investigate it, and fix it if the issue is real.
