The fact that Linux is used to describe all Linux based OSes is a bit of a misnomer. :P I am not going to say that it is "properly called GNU/Linux," because I am not much into that camps philosophy these days. However, I will say that every distro has their own unique way of wrapping their favorite tool sets arround the kernel. Yes, they are based off of a unified kernel, but they are not a unified OS. This means that quite often, compatability is very high for userland software. It also means however that sometimes things will work a little differently. :) There is a reason they all have thier own names. ^.^
