Uh-oh.  You really don't want to go there.  All Linux versions are not
alike, but they are alike in that each has its idiosyncrasies and each
has specific combinations of hardware and add-on software that it
doesn't like.  Ubuntu is one of the better choices in the personal GUI
workstation class.  Trying something else you'll just find that you
wish you were back in the nicely padded cell of Ubuntu, not that there
are no walls.

Stick with Ubuntu, and spend 5000 yen or so on beer and pizza and
invite some of the gurus over to look at your box, and teach you the
basics.  Or if it's a laptop, go to a meeting/nomikai early.

If after a bit of training you find you don't like *Ubuntu*, feel free
to switch *then*.
