All Linux versions are not alike, but they are alike in that each has its idiosyncrasies and each has specific combinations of hardware and add-on software that it doesn't like. Ubuntu is one of the better choices in the personal GUI workstation class. Trying something else you'll just find that you wish you were back in the nicely padded cell of Ubuntu, not that there are no walls. Stick with Ubuntu, and spend 5000 yen or so on beer and pizza and invite some of the gurus over to look at your box, and teach you the basics. Or if it's a laptop, go to a meeting/nomikai early. If after a bit of training you find you don't like *Ubuntu*, feel free to switch *then*.
