[tlug] Configuring video and audio in Debian 4

I am a real noob so pardon the ignorance.  I am setting up Debian 4 for the first time and am having audio and video issues of various kinds within Gnome.  There seems to be a lot of info available but what is valid or accurate is difficult for me to determine.

Can anyone recommend some good comprehensive resources for Debian4(Etch?) video and separately audio setup?
