- Subject: [tlug] Fun with Kubuntu 8.04
Some of you may notice that this mail is being sent from a WIN machine. That's because I have managed to break Kubuntu. Well, maybe break is a bit harsh ... After an number of upgrade-created problems in going from 7.04 to 7.10 to 8.04, I reinstalled v.8.04 from a CD (the .iso came from one of the main servers and not a mirror) without reformatting the partition in hopes of being able to just drag and drop some of the pre-existing structure into the new version. Instead, I now have a version of Kubuntu that offers absolutely no language support -- except English. There are absolutely no other choices available. There are other problems, too. The list of available packages on Adept Installer is seriously shortened -- no Firefox, no Thunderbird, no Synaptic ... and a lot of other recognizable stuff. Apt-get commands result in "file not found" responses even for stuff that is obviously there. So, I reformatted the partition and reinstalled. And, once again, I have no language support. I can't find anything in the manuals to indicate that language support is even a separate, installable package. Adept says Language Support is installed. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but, as soon as Language Support is removed the icon in Adept is greyed out and it can't be reselected. I'm trying to download an .iso from a Japan site to see if I get something different (file size of the .iso from JAIST is a different size from the one I got from the main Ubuntu server). Anyone else seen this kind of result? -- CL
