You might want to look at O'Reilly's Programming Collective Intelligence for a survey of dfferent machine learning techniques with a major bend towards web applications. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/9780596529321/ I've been reading through the book very slowly but it probably has a bag of algorithms that you can apply to creating a recommendation system depending on how fancy you want to get. It also does a good job of tying the concepts and jargon with a pretty relevant real world example imo. Alain
