The initial learning curve is a bit steeper- the way they label partitions (hd0,0) etc. is somewhat counterintuitive or at least it is different than the standard linux hard drive naming system, but once you've figgured out the basics, it might be actually easier to boot into those other filesystems than LILO. Reason being, you can use <tab> to autocomplete what you are looking for on the boot line. If you don't know if there is a kernel there, you can hit tab and it will show you what's available, etc... Then again, it seems you already have a lot on your hands with 4 OS's on one compy ;-) IRT #1 from your question, it appears the kernel can't find the root filesystem. Try booting off a live CD, then once you get a command line do some poking around using fdisk and mount, see what you can find out about your architecture, then you can use those clues to create a new bootloader setup using either grub or LILO.
