I've done roughly the same thing for roughly the same purpose (IBM X22,
groovy little thang).

I ended up getting a cheap external USB DVD drive (actually just bought
the case and stuck in a drive from a dead laptop I had). I've found it
useful once in a while even after the install. 

One thing to be wary of with used notebooks is that often the original
batteries are worn out and won't recharge well. If you get a popular
brand/model you can find replacement batteries online, but they tend to
be expensive relative to the cost of the used computer.
