For _serious_ *nix programming, I highly recommend the 2nd 
edition of "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" (APUE) 
by Stevens and Rago. It was updated to cover Linux. 

The 1st edition is also superb, but it became dated. 
Many details have changed. Since it came out in '92, 
it did not cover Linux. 

Stevens was a _superb_ writer.

For learning how to program in C, APUE is inappropriate.
