Can you search using regular expressions? ;)

Which reminds me: one of my most desired features for OpenOffice.org is a 
regular expression search feature that lets you apply a style to all matched 
selections/paragraphs.  I need this feature quite often and have to do it the 
long way: extract the XML and use Vim.  Does anybody on this list have 
experience in writing OpenOffice.org macros or plugins?  I looked into it 
once, but I was turned off by the lack of documentation.
