You are right.
The box is from Firefox, and is just it's way of saying that the font
it's using can't render the appropriate gliph. Other browsers might do
this differently (show a question mark, dot, empty box etc).
Of course, like Jim noted, since you passed a non shift_jis character to
Amazon's web page which sends everything in shift_jis, it's going to
mess it up (in this case turning the Chinese characters into the 00A1
character [1]).  My guess is that Firefox picks its font based on the
encoding it is trying to display. In such a case the 00A1 wouldn't
appear correctly since it is also not in shift_jis.
