Why do you see that as a waste? Open source is not *just* about freedom, but it *is* about freedom. Open source *is* about better ways to do business, but it is not *just* about business. If people want to take their proprietary earnings in kind (ie, other people's code being available to them, or more altruistically, to the world), what grounds have you to call that a waste?
