Try making a new username on your machine, logging in as that used and try openoffice, it could be something broken in your users config files.
Have you changed anything recently? java? kde?
What kind of indefinite silence is it? Does it give you the prompt back or just hang for ever? Maybe it's trying to get to some network resource you had available before but don't now?
If you're feeling brave you could try: strace -f /usr/X11R6/OOo-calc
which will show you what it is doing, may or may not be useful.
