On Debian, the system-wide menus are stored in:
    /var/lib/afterstep/menu/Debian
    /usr/share/afterstep/start
Your personal menu is in ~/.afterstep/start (which probably won't exist 
unless you've created it). If you created a personal menu, i don't 
think AfterStep will look at the system-wide one anymore. So the first 
thing i do after creating ~/.afterstep/start is to create a file in 
that called .include with contents:
    name AfterStep
    include_ordered 1000 "/usr/share/afterstep/start"
