I agree about the periods, I am not too sure about the reasoning behind them, I am not concerned either but wanted to ad my 2 yen.
I find the excessive periods slightly annoying for this sole reason;
In my mail reader when a subject has been changed it lands in the same thread which is no problem but this is what I see as I scan the subjects.

I have come to accept Jim's position as he has the list moderators and RFCs on his side on changing the subject line and do it when I see fit to encapsulate the thoughts in my mail. But if things were slightly different say like so....

I would be able to understand w/o too much hassle how message X got into thread Y. Yes I can increase the size of the subject area as well but then loose other details like who and when.

My 2 yen worth take it or leave it.
