Jim means to try those suggestions.  They'll change your display mode
on the fly, gradually selecting less and less demanding modes.

Note that a 1024x768 screen in 24-bit mode requires ~= 3x(3/4) = 2-1/4
MB of video RAM ... do you have that much?
