I think the first thing you need to do is to try and boot into a
live-cd distribution such as Knoppix. If/when you've succeeded in doing
that, the thing to do is have a mosey around in dmesg to find any
alarming messages, and to run lspci to get an idea of the exact
hardware in your system. Note that simply giving us the exact model of
your laptop isn't going to be of much help because manufacturers often
have the annoying habit of flogging completely different machines under
the same model number.

Maybe hit it with memtest86 too just to be on the safe side.

Once you know exactly what hardware is under the hood, you'll be able
to google for potential problems with it and the Linux kernel.
