There isn't. It depends completely on the use of the system. Generally, though, I don't see anything wrong with using one huge partition for your OS unless you have specific reasons to do otherwise. Most virtual machine managers will let you use a large file on the host OS partition to emulate a drive for a client OS, at some not-huge cost in performance.
