Ah yes. Not having a name for 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts will likely cause issues for any number of programs.
Which distro are you running that did not populate this by default?
Fedora Core 6. The default /etc/hosts file contains the following entry: ::1 myhostname localhost.localdomain localhost
(which I think is for IPv6?), but didn't include an entry with 127.0.0.1
