I finished up getting a Lgoicool Qcam Communicate STX this is the Japanese version of the Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX.
They are one and the same. I'm pleased to report that installation was a non-issue under Kubuntu Feisty Fawn. "It Just Works"
Flawlessly!! No drivers to compile and install - nothing!!
I had read a community doc [1] on the ubuntu site that suggested camorama as a "good little app" to test the webcam on.
The picture is clear enough but the colour terrible. It appeared the red and blue signals have been swapped. Adding the colour correction filter fixed this. The image in the config dialog of Kopete was good from the start.
