well, this is what I do not understand. Why the very same BIOS likes
booting the older kernel from the very same drive and partition, while

because they might very well reside on different parts of the disk. The old kernel might be within the first 1023 blocks, while the new one could be somewhere above that.
Does it suggest that either BIOS upgrade or repartitioning are
inevitable? (i.e. no hope for simply solving that by waiting for another
kernel upgrade sometime in the future?)

If your BIOS allows you to I believe you could redefine the disk geometry to have less cylinders. From the top of my head I don't remember how you best could do that, but if you're lucky it's an option in your bios for changing the geometry.

Another way of doing it is getting the new kernel moved to a location earlier on the disk, but that is probably not a trivial operation..
