I think it was the -c (check) parameter to mkfs.ext3 that made it go so slowly; when I tried without that it went much much quicker. But, now I'm formatted, when I try any large copies the kernel (or something) keeps complaining and stopping. If I copy one file (each 1GB) at a time it seems okay. Sigh, looks like I'll have to open up the box and connect the drive using IDE. Darren P.S. This is using Groovy "IDE > USB 2.0 SIMPLE", which I bought 15 months ago for 2,280 yen. At the time I had the same problem, but hoped some kernel update since then might have fixed it. The idea is nice: plug one end in to a bare hard disk, the other end in to a USB port, and instant extra storage. I know someone using the same thing with Windows and Mac with no problems. So, not recommended for linux.
