Maybe he's a DIY-er. In which case, isn't telling them to buy Foo Brand a little non-helpful?
No, not at all. I purchased a brand X desktop (w/ 3 GHz dual core 64bit Intel processor/ 2GB ram/250 GB hard drive, DVD+-RW, 256MB graphics, et al.) at a military Exchange for around 700 USD. To build a similar box could easily had cost me three times the price on the Japanese market. Considering the speed at which hardware becomes obsolete why pay top dollar when it could be had for less. It's nice to DIY, but its nicer to have money in your wallet afterwards. Regardless, he can easily send advice send my advice to /dev/null. :-) It's just my two cents.
