Why learn yet something else?
I sort of agree in this instance. If you are going to play with _Linux_ and you are a newbie then bash is a good place to start. As Godwin pointed out it is the default for most/all distros. Also, learning a bit about bash may help Dave with his command line skills in general.
Once hitting a wall that bash cannot handle, or simply becoming curious about what else is available then moving up the learning curve to python, perl, ruby or whatever may be a more natural progression.
