CPUs have for some time been so fast that for two equivalant RAID configurations you will either see no speed difference between hardware and software RAID or the software version will be faster.

I generally avoid hardware RAID because it can make life much more
difficult if a controller fails, not to mention it usually being more
costly.

For most applications, if the RAID is reasonably well configured, the
biggest factor affecting speed will be the number of disk arms (disk
drives) you have. The next largest will be the speed of individual drives.

So for your situation, the best thing to do would be to go for option
(1) and shell out an extra 30K for two more drives, and perhaps another
controller to go with them if you are short on controllers on your
motherboard.
