XHTML, CSS, and Javascript are must-haves. Perl is in pretty wide use. Ruby is popular in Japan and a cool language to boot.
PHP is in far wider use than Perl or Ruby in Europe at least. In fact I work pretty much exclusively in that language. Does it not have any followers at all in Japan?
I hate to say it, but I think PHP is by far one of the most popular languages in Japan. After that is probably Perl then Ruby. Of course, Java and .Net/VB might be higher than PHP. This is coming from experience interviewing candidates and also some older Japanese trade magazines like ASCII and JavaWorld, SoftwareDesign etc... Things might have changed a bit since then, but I am confident that PHP is very popular here in Japan.
