Thank you all for your assistance.
Stephen's instructions has got me set up right so that I can treat the directory hierarchy on my local machine the same way I can treat directories on my gosting service.
One thing I thought I should check on, though, is that I get this warning when I restart Apache. Everything seems to run fine, however. Should I be concerned about it?
$ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
* Forcing reload of apache 2.0 web server...
