I spent a good part of the evening digging around the forums, and found a guy with the same kernel (except he is running Fedora) who reported an apparently identical problem, and said that he found out that it seems to be happening to people who have their USB drive plugged in during installation. He said that after a reinstall keeping the drive unplugged, the problem went away.

I tried it, and have been able to boot normally five times in a row up to now, so maybe that's it. If the problem re-occurs, I'll generate a dmesg and post it to the list.

The responses are much appreciated.
