Thank you all for the suggestions.

I had to move to ALSA. One of the reasons for wanting to play multiple 
audio  programs was to be able to play a song (audio #1) and metronome 
(audio 2) together. Gtick, the program that I use for metronome, expects 
me to give a device file for audio output. Neither ESD nor ARTS works 
for this situation.

I installed ALSA and oss-emulation. Things started working fine. Apart 
from /dev/snd/* files, there /dev/dsp[0-3] files too. I started putting 
the configuration for in the bootup sequence, modules, aliases, etc.  
After reboot(s), I don't see the /dev/dsp[0-3] files. I repeated the 
whole sequence manually, but still don't see those files. Any ideas, 
what I might be missing out?
