Thanks for the tips on lvm management.

Because you are using lvm. With lvm volumes you mount the "volume" and
not the actual physical device.

actually the /dev/hda ide drive was not on lvm, that's what was strange. Also the swap partition had nothing to do with lvm so the fact that the entire ide device was remapped after boot seemed funky to me.
