In all honesty, it took a couple of e-mail exchanges for someone who's
never used your machine to work out what was wrong by looking at your logs.

And the partitions themselves in some cases. Things may have changed since
then but I remember that W98 would do just what you say - consider that
it's the only O/S on the machine - and appropriate all the disk space,
including the partitions on which you'd just installed Linux...
