TLUG, Thank you for the advice, howeverI think the discussion has gone off in a slightly different tangent than what I had hoped for. I guess I wasn't clear enough in my original post, so I apologize for that. The issue isn't converting the Unicode entities (thanks for providing the terminology) into readable Japanese. I can accomplish that. The issue is that Japanese text that is readable in Japanese on my hosting service is not equally readable on my home testing environment. Perhaps I confused the issue by bringing up the Unicode entities. They comprise only about 10 to 20 % of the Japanese data. Let's put that aside. For the majority of Japanese text, there are four places I can view it: Via the web site on my hosting service. The Japanese displays correctly here. Via phpMyAdmin on my hosting service. The Japanese displays correctly here. Via phpMyAdmin on my local testing environment. The Japanese displays correctly here. Via the web site on my local testing environment. The Japanese *does not* display correctly here. I do not understand how a simple export of the data from my hosting service, and import of a .sql file into my local environment has lost the ability to correctly display within a web page served from my local server. And I'm especially confused as to why it displays correctly in my local phpMyAdmin interface, but not my local web page environment. Perhaps my question can be boiled down to just that. How is it possible for my Japanese text to be readable in phpMyAdmin, and not in my PHP web page? -- Dave M G
