The problem is not using more then one mailing list, which is fine.
Cross posting is spaming across a number of mailing lists, because you
couldn't be bothered working out which one was appropriate.

This explanations is trying to put it in terms of "how it is in your
best interests not to cross post", because some people couldn't give a
*** about anyone but themselves, so wasting some else's time answering a
question that they already found the answer to might not be enough of a
reason.
