[tlug] Redhat Enterprise and PHPs MBSTRING

Good day

I am installing a system and for some reason we are having a problem 
with encoding of japanese text to be sent out in emails.  The emails 
either come in "mojibake" or cutoff.  Has anyone else had any problems 
using Redhat Linux Enterprise with PHP and MBString?

System with problem:

Dual 1.8Ghz 2GB RAM 73GB SCSI RAID5 ARRAY
Redhat Linux Enterprise AS 2.1
PHP 4.3.10 with MBstring
Apache 1.3.33
MySQL 4.1.10


System without problem:

Dual 2.4Ghz 2GB RAM 2x73GB HDD
Redhat Linux 9
PHP 4.3.10 with MBstring
Apache 1.3.33
MySQL 4.1.10

A note, the data in MySQL is in EUC format, this has been verified.

Any suggestions would be very welcome
