Wow, hope I didn't make myself sound like a Deb expert, I'm waiting for
Stephen or Jonathan to come to your aid.  

Seriously, I don't remember how I learned the stuff I had on my page.  I
remember googling when sound didn't work, and finding that information.

I don't even remember now if I recompiled the kernel, or used their
stock kernel, relying on them automagically detecting it.

As Deb's stock kernel has most things in there as modules,  I would
~think~ that might work.  However, I've only run Deb on two different
boxes, and in both cases, it worked by doing what I've described.
Because it worked after doing that, I've never investigated further, for
example, never run into your situation of an onboard sound card that I
don't wish to use.
