- Subject: [tlug] printer setup and config problem
I'm trying to get my HP Deskjet 955 working on Debian/Sarge/KDE3.2.
Using the KDE printer setup applet, I got to the place where the
location of the driver is requested, and not being able to find one on
my system, I found an HP Linux driver package with instructions at
http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/install.php
Where I got the following instructions:
> The download includes the HPIJS source code and a platform-independent
> automake/autoconf makefile. The makefile will compile and install the
> hpijs driver. By default the makefile will also do a Foomatic and CUPS
> install. After downloading to your directory use the following
> instructions.
> # tar xzvf hpijs-1.x.tar.gz
> # cd hpijs-1.x
> # ./configure
> # make
> Log in as root on your machine
> # make install
When I got to # ./configure, I found out that I was lacking the
necessary compiler, so I apt-got gcc. Running it again, I got
xps8250:/home/chuck/docs/temp/hpijs-1.6.1# ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
Googling this error message, I turned up a good number of mail
discussions, but no responses specific enough to allow me to figure out
what, exactly is wrong.
`config.log' is quite long, but I'll paste it below. If anyone can
determine what I am lacking (beyond serious computing skills), it'll be
much appreciated.
