What kernel do you use and what modules (usb and scsi) are loaded?
I had a similar problem getting my ipod recognized as a scsi disk device.
Look into /proc/scsi and /proc/bus/usb to see if you can find any traces
of the device there.
This script helped me get the scsi disk device recognized:
