Hi Brett, first you need to identify the source of the white noise exactly. Turning away from the comp reduces the problem so the guitar cables could be the cause. Did you make sure the monitor EPA system is activated to reduce emissions from yr monitor after the cpu upgrade. Check out the bios settings of the motherboard, too. Yr comp case is probably aluminium anyway so although aluminium foil will help to reduce heat to the case you will need to get that extra reflected heat out of the computer and the foil may not solve the noise problem. Try higher grade noise resistant insulated cables from guitar to guitar amp. Don't allow the guitar cables to run parallel or even cross any of the computer connecting cables or electrical power course cable. of course, if it is the computer picking up the white noise, it is most likely to be from a cable. (had one computer that actually picked up a radio programmme is the speakers were on and the computer turned off. Rerouting cables from video card TV out removed that irritation) Is there a white noise control in the sound card input software that should be disabled? Top quality input cables might help, too. And checking the impedance of your cable set-up to the computer from the guitar amp to ensure it is compatible with the rest of your system. The change of Ghz has obviously something to do with the problem but did you re-install the former cpu to check if the new cpu is actually part of the problem? Lastly or firstly, try earthing the computer and also separately earthing the guitar set-up. I use one of my home computers as part of my home studio. I have always had problems with noise but with my recent CPU upgrade 1Ghz->2Ghz it has brought it to a head. The guitar pickups pickup incredible white noise and with a compressor it is unusable. Moving away 1 meter and turning away reduces it to managable levels but then I can't touch my computer. Does anyone have any ideas (i don't want to use a noise limiter/filter)? The only thing I can think of is sheilding case, but how?
