Not recently, I still lived in Japan at the time, but I used a USB mouse and 
keyboard on Debian at that time.  I don't recall if I set up the mouse during 
the install or not (I think not) but it was no problem making it work; I just 
ran modconf and picked the modules and that was it.  This was about 18 months 
ago, on Woody.

The kernel already has that support compiled in modules.  Under what 
circumstances do they suggest a recompile is necessary?
