Linus releases the base kernel with well defined and rather free terms.. Others are free to take it where they want within the limits of the distribution license. Some linux distributions take one place on the curve, others another. All of them take a stance and prioritize some particular issue (or set of said). Claiming dictatorial powers in the hands of any one of them is at best fantasy. You will probably never get a software venue with more choice and and such a lack of coercion as you have now with the present ecology of uni..Linux distros. Godwin> At least the patching is done by competent kernel Godwin> programmers. Please don't compare a RH-patched kernel to a Godwin> Monkeydrake-patched kernel. The two bear no resemblance. I have few views on Mandrake other than the observation that some folks I respect seem to like it. Most folks I know who go for it tend to be from a harder core technical bent and I have yet to see a bank or other non-startup with real money on the line go for it. Most in that sort of situation tend toward Redhat or if from europe, possibly SuSE. Cheers, Bruce
