The make alternative I've been playing with is a-a-p
<http://www.a-a-p.org/>. A-A-P is Bram Moolenaar'sa
Python-based project that does 'make' and also attempts to
handle package downloading, installation and management, and
part of the SCons "configure" domain. (There is also an
'Agide' A-A-P GUI IDE.)
I suppose it is rather ant-like, but with Python instead of
Java, and its own recipe syntax rather than its own XML DTD.
