I use it if opening OpenOffice, or, for example, Sylpheed, the mail
client that I used to use when using a Gui one (or with mutt as well).

Having the script is easier--canna, as you mentioned earlier can be made
to run on startup--not sure where you would start kinput2 -canna if you
boot up in graphics mode.  In RH, I would put it in my .Xclients-default
file.  Howevr, I boot in text mode, so startx is a seperate command for
me, that reads the .Xclients (or .Xclients-default if you're using more
than one window manager.)
