Thanks for your reply. I am looking over that page now. I'm still not sure
what goes where and for what purpose, but I would like to understand all
this.

I guess what I am confused about is - how do I just set things once so that
all the apps that I start, no matter how or from where I start them, will
recognize kanji input. If the app doesn't support kanji input fine - the
characters will mojibake in that case. But rather than running a script
before each app, or setting some to work with kinput2 and others to ignore
it, isn't there just one setting somewhere so that, like with my Mac or with
Windows, the SHIFT-SPACE is always active?

Good point. This is Redhat 9.0.
