Have you tried Gaim?  <http://gaim.sf.net/>  It is a
multi-protocol instant messaging client that works
fine with RH9 and Yahoo.  (And ICQ, AIM, Jabber, MSN,
and some others that I don't use.  It even has some
support for IRC, which is a little strange, but usable
for a channel or two if you don't want another client
open.)
