Try freebsd-questions@example.com , I found it very useful.
Do mention your SCSI driver's exact model and the FreeBSD version.
You could also try exchanging more hardware components,
FreeBSD can be very unforgiving on hardware. I have an IDE
disk which it refused to boot from (made a horrible grinding
noise), though it mounted perfectly as a non-root partition.
FWIW I got FreeBSD 4.5 running on a similar configuration to yours.
