Thought this might interest folks here, if they haven't seen it already. Let's hope it catches on. Anyone know if Oregon was one of the states named in the big suit against MS? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [openi18n:1171] Oregon bill mandates open source Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2003 07:52:37 -0800 From: Helena S Chapman <hchapman@example.com> Reply-To: openi18n@example.com To: openi18n@example.com CC: mcneil@example.com, Doug Beattie <dbb@example.com> Marketplace Abstract: Oregon could become the first state to require that open-source software be considered by its agencies as an alternative to any proprietary solution, if a bill introduced this week passes muster. The Open Source Software for Oregon Act would mandate that any state government agency consider open-source software for all new software acquisitions and make purchasing decisions based on a "value-for-money basis." Moreover, under the act, state workers would have to avoid buying products that don't comply with open standards. Comment: Other states could follow Oregon's lead , California might be next. While government procurement practices may seem trivial, such actions really set the tone for future purchases and creating a level playing field. Government purchases are extremely important in this down market. This sector is stable compared to others and all of our competitors have it as a target. More ISVs will look to have Linux enable offerings in order tap into this market if similar bills begin to pass in other states.
