The 'N' is the key. In fact my answer is more about RTFM than sed
itself. I found it in 5 minutes, including my own tests.
What means RTFM in that case, in this thread (as it was quite hot)?

I *absolutely* know that a few years ago, I was unable to find the right
manual for many commands or system calls.
I can today, and I try to help anybody to get answers. Even trivial
ones...

Sometimes I am angry (a few weeks ago on this list, if you remember),
but for minutes only. I apologize, generally, when I realize that, for
me, the beginner is always right, even if I feel unhappy to spend time
for easy stuff.
